Often when I purchase Pride Organic brand milk it spoils quickly, even before the sell-by date. Is this common? Am I doing something wrong?

Pride of Mainstreet and Cedar Summit milk are affected by temperature changes. If the milk is left out for even a short time, it spoils faster. It helps to store it in the coldest part of your fridge.

If you're not going to do the sales for the whole month, please include on your literature the dates the sales are going through.

Dates are found on all of our signs by each individual product. When a sign says "While Supplies Last," that means we have a limited supply and we cannot guarantee availability. I have asked our flyer producer to look into the feasibility of placing dates on the flyer - the problem is these flyers are used by dozens of co-ops who choose their own sale dates.

I think you should change your patronage refund system. Instead of mailing checks to everyone, you should figure out a way to have it as a credit on the register computer system. It would save paper, postage, and time.

We looked into this, but the state co-op law under which we are incorporated requires that we return legal tender to our members. If the law changes, we'd look into it again.

I was checking out the rubber duckies you sell in the brown boxes and noticed the type of squeaky plug in the bottom. Did you know that they easily pop out and choke children - there were lots of lawsuits in the '70s regarding this type of plug.

Thanks for your concern. There is a warning label on the box concerning the "choking hazard." The rubber duck is not recommended for children under 3.

Why does the organic/natural lunchmeat spoil so fast once the package is opened?

Because these products contain no nitrates or other preservatives, they stay fresh for only a few days after the seal is broken. However, some of the dried salamis and turkey sticks are shelf-stable for a much longer time.

Can you bring back the carob almonds?

Yes, they are now available again in the bulk aisle.

To encourage more member voting in the annual election, you might want to send the ballots out with the patronage refund checks. REI does this and it works for us.

We are required by state co-op law to hold our election and membership meeting before we could possibly get the checks out. The numbers are barely ready by the meeting. REI operates under different statutes from another state.

I like Nutrition Action. I wish you could continue supplying it. The Wellness Letter is ok, but Nutrition Action is my preference.

We were thinking it was time for a new point of view. CSPI (publisher of Nutrition Action) seems to have an agenda - against supplements, marginally pro-radiation, and a fairly limited focus on sodium and fat for nutrition. We thought we'd give The Wellness Letter a try. We will reassess next year.
