Get a "Three Finger Discount" at Hum's Liquor Store!

The Wedge staff recently had the chance to get better acquainted with the owners of Hum's Liquors. Laurie and Mike Mackey are the current owners of the store, the second generation of Mackeys to run the business, which was started in 1963 by their father and his partner, Mr. Hum. Laurie and Mike worked in the store for much of their adult lives and bought out the older owners after their father retired. They own the entire building, which also houses The Red Dragon, Cafetto, the Fox Den, and apartments on the second floor.

In the aftermath of the push to approve a liquor license exception for an international chain store that proposes to come in one block south of the Wedge, we started talking about ways local businesses can support each other. That naturally led to a discussion of wine and beer (what doesn't?).

While Hum's has not been widely known for their wine selection, we found some interesting offerings that include Certified Organic and Fair Trade varieties, in addition to local wines. There is also a nice selection of regional beers. Mike has always made it a priority to support local breweries. They also carry gluten-free beer.

One thing led to the next, and pretty soon we were talking about special deals on wine and beer for Wedge shoppers. We were going to have a Super-Secret Code to tell the cashier, but then realized that anyone in line might just repeat what they hear.

So, here is how to get the Wedge Shopper discount when you pick up the featured beer or wine: make a "W" with your right hand—you know, just fold your pinkie down with your thumb, and wave "W" at the cashier. That's it. No need to say a thing.
