First Year a Challenge for "Third-Generation" Natural Foods Co-op in Northeast

By: Ginny Sutton, Eastside Food Co-op Board President

As Eastside Food Co-op approaches its one-year anniversary on December 4th, we are tempted to reflect on the past twelve months, acknowledge its challenges and accomplishments, too numerous to mention here, and salute those who have managed both: our superb staff, led by General Manager Amy Fields.

However, at this point in our development, looking backward seems less useful than looking forward. For the challenges continue to present themselves, and our vision and mission drive us to further accomplishments.

During the last two years or so of our approach to store opening, our consultant Bill Gessner continuously impressed upon us the fact that we were attempting to build a "third-generation" food co-op. We could not afford to evolve from a "gunny sack on the front porch" stage in order to survive our first year in the current-day grocery market. We needed to be a full-service grocery store right out of the gate.

Going from nothing to operational virtually overnight just one year ago was a terrific challenge. Surviving our first year has been a real growth experience for all involved. Because of our oh-so-responsive staff, and managers and directors who respect, support, and communicate with each other, we feel confident and excited about Year Two.

Thanks to Wedge members and staff for their support of our effort. Please tell your friends about the Co-op in Nord'east at 26th and Central. We're Eastside, your community-owned natural foods grocery store, open daily 9 to 9. All welcome!
