Wedge Co-op Donations Committee Recipients 2005

The Wedge donations committee gives a limited number of $50.00 gift certificates (3 per month) to organizations that are co-op related, food related, focused on the environment, and in the neighborhood served by the Wedge, and are limited to one donation per organization in a calendar year. Requests must be made in writing, on organizational letterhead, at least eight weeks before needed.

Green Patch Recipients

Green Patches are given to customers at the cash register who bring their own bags for packing groceries. Each Green Patch is worth five cents. On a quarterly basis, proceeds are donated by the Wedge to a community garden. The total of $6,378 reflects the use of 127,560 recycled bags.

  • Soo Line Community Garden - $3099.55
  • Green Space Partners/Green Institute - $3278.45

Food Shelf Donations

Last year Wedge customers donated $14,214.04 at the checkout cash registers for area food shelves, during the period of Jan.1, 2005 - Dec. 31, 2005. Those donations were dispersed in either cash or food purchased wholesale by the Wedge to the following organizations:

  • Emergency Foodshelf Network - $3,414.27
  • Groveland Emergency Foodshelf - $3,200.00
  • Joyce Emergency Foodshelf - $4,499.77
  • Sabathani Foodshelf - $3,100.00

In addition, the Wedge donated an additional $6,578.50 of food items to local food shelves, calculated at wholesale.

Wedgeshare Recipients

Each year the Wedge philanthropic Wedgeshare grant program donates a portion of profits to organizations who apply. In October the membership voted to allocate the fund to the following organizations:

  • Cornucopia Institute - $20,000
  • Youth Farm and Market Project - $15,000
  • Foundation for Minneapolis Parks - $15,000
  • White Earth Land Recovery Project - $10,000
  • Sister's Camelot - $15,000
  • Land Stewardship Project - $10,000
  • Women's Cancer Resource Center - $10,000
  • HourCar - $5,000

Other Donations:

  • Shepherd's Way Farm (after fire) - Wedge gave $2000 - customers gave $55
  • Mill City Farmer's Market $2,500

Hurricane Katrina Relief:

  • Katrina/American Red Cross - customers gave $2311.95
  • Co-op Development Foundation/ Katrina: $3098.90 (1/2 from customers, 1/2 from Wedge)
  • Staff donated $5162.95 toward Katrina Relief:
    • Co-op Develpoment Foundation, $1247.35
    • Jazz Foundation of America, $1469.95
    • Noah's Wish, $2445.65
