Rice: No Shortage at the Wedge

Share

In April, a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) article advised Americans to stock up on rice due to coming price increases. Combined with international news about rice shortages and price hikes in the developing world, increasing wheat prices and news about the wholesale clubs in this country limiting purchases of imported rice, it was easy to interpret this to mean that rice problems are on the horizon in this country.

David Hampton, Wedge Bulk Buyer, called Lundberg Farms in California, the primary rice supplier to the Wedge for over thirty years. Lundberg Farms grows all the domestic rice we carry in bulk.

The word is good. Lundberg is on track for a great harvest this year and the company foresees only a normal annual price increase. In addition to a variety of long, medium and short grain brown rices, we sell Lundberg basmati and jasmine in bulk. If your favorite imported rice does get scarce or expensive, try these high-quality domestic products.

We will continue to monitor the situation to keep you informed about what our suppliers are telling us.
