Fall always seems to be a season of conflict for me. The weather is usually wonderful with sunny days and foggy mornings. The beauty of autumn takes our breath away while thoughts of winter creep into our minds.
As I write this, the farm is in full swing with a full crew tending to mid-season chores. The corn is in, the kale and tomatoes are plentiful, and the challenging broccoli and watermelon are back on the shelf. I'll always remember Martin Diffley taking me aside shortly after the first bad spring weather and saying softly, "Lindy, once you are a farmer, you never look at the weather in the same way again. You can't farm and not believe in God." The really bad storms passed us by and we are fortunate for that. The cold damp spring took a toll on our crops, but we hope for a long autumn to make up for the late start.
This issue of the newsletter is full of important information for members and owners of the coop. The annual meeting will take place the first Saturday in October and will again be at Gardens of Eagan. We'll be electing two board members while celebrating our first year as farm owners and sharing our year's successes with you. This year you'll be able to vote electronically, if you wish. Please take the time to participate in this most important duty of ownership. I appreciate the time and energy that the board of director candidates have put in to this election. Their backgrounds are impressive and I commend their willingness to serve.
The WedgeShare committee is pleased to present you a great selection of organizations who'd like to share in our success. Our surveys suggest that giving back to our community is high on the list of things members value about the Wedge.
I'm looking forward to seeing you at the farm in October! You can find meeting details in this issue, or watch for signs posted in the store as the date approaches.
